| Why are thread
driven boom vangs new on the market ?
It was very costly to produce special threaded rods before digital temperature
controlled processing changed this recently. Former trials using standard
trapezoidal threaded rods failed because these rods have much less cross
sectional area and therefore bended too easily under pressure forces.
But maximum pulling and pressure forces still differ widely
as one can read in the technical descriptions?
This is not quite true anymore. The telescopic part and with it the
rod are now supported by 7 sleeves and bearings. This has raised the
maximum stability to 4 tons for pressure and pulling forces. Although
tests at the National Institute for Material at Garching/Bavaria (s.
tearing a Boomtrim) had shown considerable higher pressure
limits than we reveal, we are cautious and have set dynamic fatigue
strength limits to 2 tons.
But a close hauled main sheet produces also lots of pressure
...
You can damage everything. But because the Boomtrim controls the vertical
portion of the main sheet tension, the horizontal force to move the
boom towards the center is much less. So it's very notable when you
have hauled the boom near the centerline and start applying unnecessary
vertical forces also.
And how about the dynamic loads of heavy In-Furl-Booms in rough
seas?
It was a challenge to absorb the impact of an 8 meter long, 200 Kg heavy
boom dancing up and down for long periods. The new design now houses
30 spring washers which you can configure to cushion up various loads.
Do we need the traveller anymore when using the Boomtrim?
If one can precisely control the vertical forces with the Boomtrim,
cruisers don't need the traveller anymore. This eliminates a constant
hassle of a stumbling block in the cockpit. On the cabins roof they
are usually inefficient while too short , for cruisers they just ad
weight, cost and complexity.
Most racing dinghies used to have travellers, but relatively few classes
still use them. Instead they have "hoops" (for center mainsheets)
or bridles (on the stern), which raises the mainsheet block level with
the boom and ensures that the sheet only exerts a lateral pull.
Why don't you offer the Universal-Brackets anymore ?
We have found that Boomtrims are an After Market Product until now.
So nearly all customers have already mounted vang brackets. If these
are strong enough they are using the existing brackets. This eliminates
drilling new holes into sensitive rigging. So we are adapting the clevis
parts of the Boomtrims to these brackets. Although we try to have parts
on stock for Forespar, SÈLDEN, BAMAR, QuickVang, we manufacture
custom clevis for short time delivery.
