| Where can I buy
a Boomtrim?
Either from a dealer or directly at Life Marine.
Sailors are often en route, how do you handle repair?
All Boomtrims are two years warranted. Contact the source where you
bought it or email Life Marine to clear whether you send back the whole
unit or the damaged parts only.
That would mean, I have to demount the unit?
Yes, all Boomtrims are demountable within minutes with a hexagon tool.
You should see then at a glance the possible reason for a malfunction.
We'll put a detailed manual on our website which gives you precise illustrated
instructions.
Do I have to send back the broken part?
Generally we need a proof of the broken component. This might be a digital
photo per e-mail or sometimes a detailed description. Only, if we need
to analyze the defect we will ask to send the part to the dealer or
to us. Specially being aboard, it is much less costly, faster and convenient
to change only the defective part. Think of all the packaging, transportation
fees and eventual hassle at some remote custom office. Sailors are at
home all over the world and need their gear promptly.
Which parts are prone to break?
Well repairs are inconvenient to us as for our customers, so we emphasize
on a robust and intelligent design already during construction. But
you never can dimension parts for misuse. Think of the immense forces
of wind and waves boosted by high lever arms in a system like a rig.
And of course - corrosion - if someone doesn't take care every technical
devise will suffer with the years.
What kinds of mechanical problems might occur?
Almost first the existing brackets will not hold the load on pull, all
Boomtrims will have here roughly 100% safety reserve and you are well
over 4 tons. This is not the case with threaded rods at full extension
under pressure forces. V2A steel rods are prone to bend under heavy
load. We have chosen a thread which leaves a big cross sectional area
for stability and in normal use you will never reach the limit. However
you can put overload pressure forces on the rod by pulling the main
sheet rigorously hard with a winch. Just multiply the transmission of
a winch with the lever arm, add some dynamic impact of a heavy boom
on a wild ride and you end up with huge forces. Or imagine the lever
arm forces having four jolly sailors sitting at the end of the boom
for a family picture.
What repairs are not covered by the warranty?
That with the family picture of course and others which will happen
when one does something stupid like this. And one always have to engage
circuit protection with the right amps, otherwise you could damage the
rig also. We cannot accept responsiblity for brackets, etc. from third
party suppliers.
Which parts have to be serviced regularly?
No particular ones. Corrosion critical parts like electric connection
or DC motor or ball or needle-roller bearings are sealed against environmental
effects. So you should have a look once a year to the O-rings and shaft
seals inside the BTE models. The gear and the spindle house have life
time lubrication and the rod runs in hightec synthetic drive nuts without
any lubrication even better. It would be good if you just use the Boomtrim
from time to time.
